Biking enthusiasts are expected to come in droves to compete in the Mountain Bike Open this Saturday at Melba’s Farm located at the junction of Barangay Alangilan in Bacolod City and Barangay Cabatangan, Talisay City.

Event organizer Arman Denajeba said participants will traverse the circuitous trail in Melba’s Farm while enjoying the shady canopy from massive trees that abounds in the area.

More than promoting sports and tourism in the cities of Bacolod and Talisay, the event aims to heighten public awareness on the preservation, conservation and protection of the environment.

Negros Occidental Tourism Officer Jennylind Cordero said the provincial government supports the event as part of the thrust to promote the province as an adventure and sports destination in southern Philippines .

Also supporting the event is MEDTREK, an organization of professional bikers and triathletes, that will be sending a contingent to compete in different categories.

MEDTREK President Miguel Yusay said the event will be another opportunity for the biking community to come together and advocate for the creation of bike lanes to ensure bikers’ safety, in the light of the recent road accident that led to the injury of four bikers.

Winners in the Open Expert category will take home P3,000 in cash, P2,000 and P1,000 for the top three spots along with trophies and gift packs while the 4 th to 10 th placers will be given medals.

Other categories and its corresponding cash prizes are: Masters (40 years old and above); Veterans (30-39 years old); Beginners A (29 years old and below); Beginners B (30 years old and above); Fat Boys (180 lbs and above); and Executive category for 50 years old and above.
